Justdiggit Expands Access to Regreening Solutions with AI-Powered App Built on OutSystems

Greener.Land’s AI assistant enables the delivery of personalized advice, expected to reach 120,000 people for sustainable land management

Justdiggit, the organisation that helps landowners worldwide restore ecosystems, has launched the Greener.Land app. The new app was built using OutSystems, a global leader transforming how companies innovate through software. Justdiggit’s custom built Greener.Land application allows farmers, residents and local partners worldwide to obtain free, tailored advice on regreening, the process of restoring vegetation and ecological health to degraded land, and measures they can take to make their land more resilient to withstand climate changes. Based on their location and various landscape characteristics, users receive recommendations from an integrated AI assistant, so that they can take targeted action. Currently, Greener.land provides regreening advice to 60,000 people on a yearly basis, a number which is expected to double thanks to the new application.

Justdiggit not only provides live training to farmers and landowners but also shares knowledge and guidance on regreening measures through the Greener.Land website. However, Justdiggit saw an opportunity to enhance accessibility and personalize the information further. To address this, it teamed up with OutSystems partner NovioQ in the ‘Build for the future‘ hackathon to develop a low-code mobile app, aiming to deliver tailored digital advice to a broader audience, making regreening knowledge more accessible and impactful.

Carl Lens, Head of Digital Regreening at Justdiggit: “We wanted to scale up and accelerate. Digital innovation tools can help us inspire more people to regreen and sharing information is key. We have been doing this directly for farmers in Africa for some time, but the techniques we work with can be applied all over the world. Offering this knowledge via Greener.Land app helps us reach more landowners and make an even greater impact, which is important considering the fact that every year, land of an area the size of Egypt is degrading.”

The development team’s impressive results at the hackathon led to the Greener.land prototype winning the competition. “After just one week, we had a first version of the app with useful features,” says Lens. “Using OutSystems, we were easily able to integrate an AI Agent with chat functionality that gives advice based on the guidelines and frameworks of our experts. Because with low-code you can build a visual prototype directly, we were also able to test the feasibility of many of our ideas that week.”

The winning app saw its potential realized through NovioQ’s partnership, which, combined with OutSystems platform, delivered an upgraded website and mobile apps.

The app, powered by an AI assistant and supported by OutSystems AI Agent Builder, offers scientific and location-based advice on suitable measures based on land use, budget, time, and landscape characteristics like height and drought. Only measures that are suitable for the terrain and climate of the chosen location are proposed. This way, landowners receive personalized advice and can take the most suitable measures to make their land greener and more climate-proof.

In addition, the app is built in such a way that the advice is also largely available offline, which is important for landowners who often work in remote environments. Lens says: “The speed at which we can adapt to new insights about our users is of great importance for the success of Greener.Land. With low-code, we can respond to this immediately, instead of worrying about the underlying technology.”

Justdiggit plans to further expand Greener.Land’s functionality with OutSystems . For example, it is investigating the possibility of enabling users to communicate with each other via the app, so that local insights can be mutually exchanged. The organization also wants to make the effect of the measures taken more visible by allowing users to upload before-and-after photos, combined with satellite images to monitor the progress of projects.

“By regreening the land, we can better prepare for the consequences of climate change such as extreme weather, forest fires and major flooding,” says Lens. “Easy access to the right knowledge through initiatives such as Greener.Land is essential to provide landowners worldwide with the information they need to take appropriate measures. In this way, we can work with them to have the greatest positive impact on their environment, supported by OutSystems.”

Harmen Hoogwout, Regional Vice President Northern Europe at OutSystems, said: “The collaboration with Justdiggit exemplifies the capabilities of OutSystems AI Agent Builder, part of our AI-powered low-code application development, which enables organisations to use generative AI quickly, securely and entirely within the specified frameworks. We are proud that Justdiggit, with NovioQ’s ongoing support, can share tailored knowledge through Greener.land, contributing positively to the promotion of sustainable land use.”
